During the eclipse, the moon will pass between the sun and the earth. The area will see the effects of the eclipse for two hours and 40 minutes and will experience totality for four minutes, 22 seconds. Smith said that the diamond ring effect, which will appear as a ring with sparking diamonds on it, occurs during the start and the conclusion of totality. Extensive planning efforts have been underway in the county seat to prepare for what officials believe will be a large crowd of tourists in Hill County. The Wildcats lit up the scoreboard early and often against the Dallas Madison Trojans and coasted to a 61-14 victory. The win kept Whitney in the middle of the playoff discussion as the team now sits at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play. Madison fell to 2-4 and 2-2. Grandview and West both remain undefeated in district play. While the Wildcats were unable to topple West, the opportunity to knock off the state-ranked Grandview Zebras lingers. But Whitney must first focus on a series of games against Life Oak Cliff, A Plus Academy and Maypearl, who are all sitting below the .500 mark. Over the next few weeks, the Wildcats will look to fine-tune the offense and sharpen the defense, both of which had an impressive showing against Madison. With quarterback Mason Seely and running back Tristan Wilson leading a balanced attack, Whitney raced into the end zone first and never looked back. The Wildcats posted two scores in each of the first two frames for 26 first-half points. Seely eclipsed the 200-yard passing mark and tossed four touchdowns. The sophomore spread the ball to his corps of offensive weapons. Wilson was the primary playmaker who dashed the Trojans as a running back and receiver. Wilson totaled 74 yards on the ground, 119 reception yards and two touchdowns. Marcus Wilson and Jordan Johnson also racked up reception yards and hauled in touchdown catches. Following the annual crowning of the homecoming queen, Madison eventually found the end zone in the second half, but it was too little too late. The Wildcats continued to celebrate touchdowns and the defense provide no hope for a comeback. Whitney’s defensive attack was on point all night. The Wildcats blanked the Trojans in the first half and the effort was once again led by David Haynes III. The all-star linebacker once again filled the stat sheet and turned in a top-notch performance. Haynes racked up 13 tackles, one tackle for a loss, a fumble recovery and two interceptions. One of the picks was returned for a Wildcat score. Whitney returns to action next Friday to face Life Oak Cliff. At the start of the year, these juniors set a STAAR goal and decided to conquer it. With the state average meeting the “approaches” level coming in at 89%, this group of students far exceeded that at 97%. “But the true picture is that every single student who set that goal at the start of the year and was enrolled in Mrs. Richters’ class for the entire year came in at 100%,” said Principal Amy Leech. In addition, 69% of those students attained “mastery” level compared to the state average of 44%. Leech said that U.S. history was not the only STAAR report to exhibit Wildcat leadership. Area fire departments have been busy responding to grass fire calls recently, as the Texas Forest Service warned of increased wildfire activity. "The dryness we are currently seeing across portions of the state is generally what we would be experiencing in mid to late July," said Brad Smith, Texas A&M Forest Service Predictive Services Department head. "The drought that has been carried over from the spring into the summer has initiated an early start to the summer fire season. Early summer drying in June also introduces the possibility of experiencing a severe late summer fire season." State and local fire resources have responded to an average of 4,047 wildfires for 188,259 acres annually over the past five years. In 2022, firefighters have already responded to 5,047 wildfires that have burned 527,241 acres across the state. The Wildcats lost the first game played in Whitney Friday, May 6, by a score of 5-2, but went on to win the second game 9-2 in Scurry Saturday to force a third game. Whitney sealed the deal by winning 2-1 to earn the bi-district title. The playoffs will continue with Whitney and Little River Academy facing off in the area round. Game one will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lake Belton High School. Game two will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Whitney, and if game three is necessary, it will be at noon Saturday at Midway High School.
