Texas New Mexico Power kicked off improvements to the tennis court area on Cleveland Street by trimming trees and pulling stumps that surrounded the tennis courts. Ally Tello, regional community liaison for Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP), said that TNMP has an annual “Day of Service” that consists of employees volunteering at local organizations within the company’s service territories. Future goals for the space near the tennis courts include erecting the playground equipment that was donated by First Baptist Church Whitney, resurfacing the tennis court with intentions to transform it into a basketball court and adding grills and a dog park area. Donations toward the park efforts are encouraged and will be allocated to cement and mulch for the playground, the resurfacing of the tennis court, basketball goals, fencing and lighting. Those interested in donating can call Whitney City Hall at 254-694-2261 for more information. An additional aspect of the mayor’s beautification project is the “Welcome to Whitney” sign to be placed near the “Y” in Whitney. Mayor Janice Sanders said that the city has been offered pledges for the sign’s rock, labor and electricity and has also received a $1,000 monetary pledge. The Lake Whitney Garden Club will work on design plans for the landscaping of the sign. After the sign is built, the city will be raising money for three flag poles to hold the United States flag, the Texas flag and the City of Whitney flag.
