The Whitney Wildcats (7-0, 5-0) played power ball Friday night in Dallas and shattered the scoreboard in historic fashion.
Facing the overmatched A-Plus Academy Knights (2-6, 2-4), the Wildcats exploded for 85 points and refused to surrender a single point.
It was the most points ever scored by a Wildcat team and the biggest margin of victory, according to The Lakelander’s archives.
Whitney has now outscored its opponents by a total of 354-93 this season.
The Wildcats will seek to seize the momentum as showdowns with two of the tougher opponents in the district loom on the horizon. Next week’s game against Maypearl (5-2, 3-2) and the following versus Grandview (6-1, 5-0) will determine if Whitney can claim a district championship and a top seed in the playoffs.
Maypearl will visit Whitney and look to rebound from a 38-0 slip up to West (5-2, 4-1). The Trojans, who fell victim to the Wildcats earlier this season, will look to knock off Grandview from the top of the standings. If both Whitney and Grandview win, the match up on October 27 will be for the district title.
Whitney’s potent mix of offensive fireworks and defensive toughness was on full display against A-Plus Academy. For the second week in a row, the Wildcats found the end zone six times in the first quarter alone.
Whitney held A-Plus Academy to just under 100 yards and forced a stack of turnovers on the night.
The game started with a pick from Whitney’s Jairdyn Anderson, which was converted into a touchdown toss from Mason Seely to Marcus Wilson. Anderson then went beast mode and grabbed and sprinted to 85-yard and 45-yard scores.
Senior Teagan Winkler then intercepted a pass in the Knights’ territory and the scoring continued with a touchdown from Kobe Haynes. Haynes found the end zone again following a lengthy punt return from Anderson and then again at the start of the second quarter.
The party continued with the Wildcats building a jaw-dropping 57-0 lead by halftime. When it was all said and done, Seely ended up with 354 passing yards and seven touchdowns on just 13 completions. Anderson racked up 190 receiving yards and three scores. Wilson had two TD receptions, while Jontae Johnson, Miguel Figueroa and Dalton Neagle found the end zone via the ground.
Kaden Tanner starred on both sides of the ball with several long hauls, a fumble recovery and an interception return for a score. Winkler also filled the defensive stat sheet with 10 tackles, two tackles for a loss, an interception and a pass break up.
The Wildcats will host Maypearl for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff this Friday at Wildcat Stadium.
