Candidate filing for March 2024 primary elections officially opened Saturday, November 11, and will continue through Monday, December 11.
Major party candidates interested in running for local office in Hill County will file with the county chair of the Republican Party, Will Orr, or the Democratic Party, Thom Hanson.
Locally, the following Hill County offices will be on the ballot (incumbent listed in parenthesis): district attorney (Mark Pratt), sheriff (Rodney Watson), Precinct 1 commissioner (Jim Holcomb), Precinct 3 commissioner (Scotty Hawkins), tax assessor/collector (Krystal Hightower), county attorney (David Holmes), and all county constables (Precinct 1 John Miller, Precinct 2 Justin Girsh, Precinct 3 Larry Armstrong, Precinct 4 Kevin Cordell).
Also on the ballot will be the District 13 state representative seat (Angelia Orr), District 6 seat for U.S. Congress (Jake Ellzey), railroad commissioner (Christi Craddick), Texas Supreme Court (Place 2 Jimmy Blacklock, Place 4 John Phillip Devine and Place 6 Jane Bland), Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (Place 1 Sharon Keller, Place 7 Barbara Hervey, Place 8 Michelle Slaughter) and 10th Court of Appeals chief justice (Tom Gray).
There will also be a presidential election in 2024, and Senator Ted Cruz’s seat will be on the ballot.

The application for a place on the primary ballot must be accompanied by either a filing fee or a petition in lieu of filing fee signed by a certain number of qualified voters.

Those who intend to run as an independent candidate not affiliated with a political party can file a declaration with the county judge for county or precinct offices or the Texas secretary of state for district and state offices.

The March primary elections will be Tuesday, March 5, with early voting scheduled for the two weeks before the election date.
