Rodney B. Watson has formally announced he is seeking his third term as Hill County sheriff.
Sheriff Watson has spent his entire life here. He attended and played sports at Hillsboro ISD, attended Hill College and continued to help his parents by working in the hardware store. Watson’s Hardware met the needs of Hill County residents for 44 years, often extending credit to customers when times got rough. His parents, Kenneth and Nita, ran their store until Kenneth passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. Nita continued to run it after the death of her husband.
Sheriff Watson began his law enforcement career in September 1990 as a jailer under Sheriff Button. He has maintained his TCOLE Jailer’s License throughout his career and currently holds a Master Jailer’s License. In 1992, Sheriff Button sent Watson to the McLennan Community College Police Academy, where he obtained his Basic Peace Officer’s License. He holds state certifications as a master jailer, court security specialist, communications operator, instructor and master peace officer.
“Hill County is my home, it always has been and it always will be home to me,” he said. “As a single parent for most of their lives, I raised two fine young men: Kenny who works as a lineman and Davis who is a police officer for Hillsboro. I could have chased the money and gone to work for one of the higher-paying agencies in the counties to the north or south of Hill, but like I mentioned earlier, this is my home and I’ve always considered it my duty, honor and privilege to serve our community.”
Watson credits his staff for his office’s accomplishments. “We have been able to acquire a very talented and hardworking staff, with several of them having retired from large agencies in the DFW Metroplex. They bring decades of professional law enforcement experience along with their formalized education,” stated Watson.
