The candidate filing period for May city and school elections opens Wednesday, January 17, and will continue through Friday, February 16. Locally, both the City of Whitney and Whitney Independent School District will have positions available in May.
For the City of Whitney, the terms of council members Aimee Boswell, Martis Ward and Valery Peacock are expiring this year.
Filing will be at Whitney City Hall, located at 115 West Jefferson Avenue in Whitney, or call 254-694-2261 for more information about qualifications.
There will be three seats available on the Whitney ISD Board of Trustees, with the terms of Charles Buzan, Jason Sneed and Ray Watson expiring.

Also in our area, Blum ISD will have the school board seats of Jonathan Arrington and Joe Maxwell on the ballot in May. Filing will be at the school, located at 310 South Avenue F in Blum, or contact paula.french@blumisd.net for more information.
A spokesperson for the City of Blum reported that the city’s election has been moved to November this year.
The City of Covington will have the mayor’s position, currently held by Shirley Erickson, and the council seats of Diana Burnett and Bryan Barnes on the ballot. Filing will be at City Hall, located at 402 Gathings Drive in Covington. For more information, email cityhall@covingtontx.net.
Covington ISD will have three board seats available this year. They are currently held by Kevin Ray, Cody Nickell and Joe Reitz. Filing will be at the Covington ISD Administration Office, located at 501 North Main Street in Covington. For more information, email lisa.nivens@covingtonisd.org.
Those planning to vote in the May elections who are not already registered to vote have until Thursday, April 4, to register and be eligible to cast a ballot. With a busy election calendar this year, including March primary elections, those needing to register should note that they must do so by Monday, February 5, if they want to vote in the primaries.
