A group of Hill County farmers, bakers, homesteaders and artisans has announced plans for farm stall and trade days events that will be held in Hillsboro starting in April.
A “farm stall” market will be held on the first and third Saturdays of each month, offering homegrown, homemade or handmade items. Arts, crafts, quilts and other items are welcome, but all items must be grown or made by the individual selling them. On the second Saturday of each month, a trade days flea market will be held. Sellers will bring their second-hand items to share with the community.
The events will be held at the Hill Pavilion, located at the intersection of South Waco Street and Corsicana Highway in Hillsboro.
The City of Hillsboro purchased the structure and property last year as part of its overall effort to improve the appearance of the area. Planters were moved to the location from the outlet mall property, and Hillsboro Farmer’s Market filled them with plants. Lights have also been placed on the former Grimes Garage structure, now being called Hill Pavilion.
“This is an important intersection where Hillsboro gets to make an impression, so we wanted it to be a good one,” City Manager Megan Henderson said as the city began the cleanup effort.
Organizers of the Hill County Farm Stall and Trade Days are looking to the past as they re-purpose the site. A release seeking vendors stated that the group wants to bring back an event similar to the historic trade days on the courthouse square, where vendors would sell cotton, produce, excess livestock, baled hay and firewood from their wagons.
“It was a social and economic gathering place for the entire county with a chance to shop, visit with friends and make new ones,” it read. “We’re so ready to bring this back.”
All events will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information or a vendor application, follow the Hill County Farm Stall & Trade Days Facebook page, or email hillcountyfarm stalltradedays@gmail.com.
