The Whitney Independent School District (WISD) Board of Trustees met in a regular session Monday, February 12.
Brad and Melissa Coffelt were announced staff members of the month. Superintendent John McCullough read a letter from Kendra Hensley, principal of the high school, in which she nominated them: “This dynamic duo is an invaluable asset to Whitney High School, and you don’t have one without the other. The Coffelts go above and beyond for our students; their passion for agricultural education is evident through their time and energy put forth every day.”
Amber Seely, principal of the elementary school, briefly presented the mid-year elementary data and said she was pleased with the benchmark numbers overall. Assistant Superintendent Amy Leech presented a review of the benchmark data for the district, showing slight regression in some areas and advancements in others. Leech emphasized efforts to bring performance up overall.
The board voted to consider procurement of design professional services for the expansion of the weight room at Whitney High School at a later date.
Members approved an order, required notices and a resolution calling a school board trustee election on Saturday, May 4. They then approved the joint election agreement between WISD and the City of Whitney, where the district hosts the election and splits the bill with the city.
Russell Gauer spoke regarding acquiring an additional suburban for the district, stating that the lowest mileage suburban the district currently has is at 154,000. The board approved the purchase.
The board voted to approve a memorandum of understanding between the district and Teachworthy, a program that helps teachers become certified.
Also approved was the rescheduling of the Board of Trustees meeting that was set to take place Monday, April 8, the day of the upcoming total solar eclipse. Due to the expected massive influx of tourists as a result of the eclipse, the meeting was moved to Monday, April 15.
John McCullough gave the superintendent’s report. Enrollment stands at 1,440, and three employees have resigned: Jesse Scales, Chris Chadwick and Bob Kruse.
The board convened in closed session to discuss a Level III grievance, which was denied.
The board approved the hiring of Andrea Hobbs, who will teach sixth grade math. Also approved were extended contracts for administrators.

The next regular session of the board will be held Monday, March 4.
