
Whitney High School (WHS) German students traveled to the Texas State German Contest at Texas State University in San Marcos Saturday, February 24.
A total of 21 Whitney students competed this year to win 100 sweepstakes points and score 11th place among schools with large German programs.
In addition to the top 10 wins listed below, the Mary El-Beheri Memorial Scholarship award of $1,000 was presented to senior Linsey Bledsoe for her involvement in German Club and German Dance, as well as four consecutive years of participation in German regional and state competitions.
First place: Upper Level Puppet Show – “Der Teufel sucht eine Frau” – Syvana Hill (Kasper), Fabio Garcia (Seppl), William Shelton (der Teufel), Dariana Contreras (die arme Gretel) and Linsey Bledsoe (die Waldfee)
Second place: Club Album – Syvana Hill, Linsey Bledsoe, Jasmyne Britain and Dariana Contreras; Craft – “Pilze” – Rubi Cruz
Third place: Shirt Design – “Opernmaus” – Dariana Contreras, Jasmyne Britain, Syvana Hill Einzeltanz – “Markländer” – John Armstrong and Linsey Bledsoe
Fourth place: Folk Dance – John Armstrong, Jocelyn Bidwell, Linsey Bledsoe, Jasmyne Britain, Fabio Garcia, Zoey Flores, Gabriel Hinojosa, Jude Meazell, Irlanda Ortega, Xavier Romero, Kynnadi Seely, Madison Seely, Annalease Titsworth, Kenzi Ward and Kaylee Martin; Contemporary Music – “Muss i denn” – Linsey Bledsoe
Sixth place: Poetry Reading 3 – “Morgen, Kinder” – Noah Hunt
Seventh place: Photography – Kynnadi Seely
Eighth place: Photography – Linsey Bledsoe
Tenth place: Craft – “Tischdecke” – Kynnadi Seely
German teacher Lisa Mays was assisted by her colleagues Haley and Ethan Becker, as well as Silvia Ortega, who styled dancers’ hair.
Former WHS students Garret Watson, Caitlin Hosterman and Manny Herrera attended the state contest as judges for the categories of dance and sight reading.
