It was a good night for incumbents when the votes were tallied in Whitney city and school elections Saturday, May 4. Aquilla ISD voters approved a bond proposal for instructional upgrades but narrowly struck down an athletics package.
Incumbents Aimee Boswell and Valery Peacock were reelected to the Whitney City Council with 43 votes each, and newcomer Cheryl Taylor-West received 40 votes to replace Martis Ward, who did not seek another term as a council member.
Others on the ballot were Vicki Wilson (32 votes) and Debbie Gregory (28 votes).
On the Whitney ISD Board of Trustees, winners were incumbents Jason Sneed (181 votes), Ray Watson (175 votes) and Charles Buzan (155 votes).
Others trying for a school board seat were Connie Terry (124), Wayne Redding (107) and Larry Farmer (22).
Aquilla ISD voters approved Proposition A, the largest portion of the district’s bond proposal, which will fund instructional upgrades. The $9.1 million package was approved by a margin of 210-164. Proposition B, the $2.9 million proposal covering athletic upgrades, narrowly failed by a margin of 183-189.
The portion of the bond package approved by voters includes seven new classrooms, a multipurpose center, additional parking and an asphalt access drive.
The portion rejected by voters would have funded a new track and field, concessions and restrooms at the stadium, new bleachers, a press box and field lighting.
All results are unofficial until canvassed.
