Two drivers were airlifted from the site of a crash in the 1300 block of North Brazos Street Thursday afternoon, January 30.
According to reports, a female driving a southbound sport-utility vehicle is believed to have suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness while driving along North Brazos.
The vehicle accelerated, crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck a roadside sign near Sonic before crashing head-on into a pickup that was stopped at Brookshire’s waiting to turn onto North Brazos.
Whitney Police Chief Joshua Scholes estimated that the SUV may have reached speeds of 60 miles per hour before striking the truck, which spun and crashed into a pole in the parking lot.
The SUV finally came to a stop after striking another pole.
Scholes said that no other vehicles were struck by the SUV, but a piece of the truck flew off in the collision and struck another parked vehicle.
The driver of the truck was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital by CareFlite, and the driver of the SUV was airlifted to Fort Worth by Air Evac for treatment.
Whitney Police Department conducted the investigation. Whitney Fire Rescue also responded, along with Hill County Emergency Management, Hill County Sheriff’s Office and Precinct 1 Constable Kyle Nevil.
