The filing period for city and school candidates ended Friday, February 14, and there will be contested races for both the City of Whitney and Whitney Independent School District.
Mayor Janice Sanders filed to retain her seat and will be challenged by Zach Hamlin and Brian Burkhart.
Council members Sam Pierce and Jason Ince both filed to keep their seats, and they will be challenged by Debbie Gregory and Amy Teal.
Whitney ISD has two school board seats currently held by Katie Foster and Amy Hoffman available this year, with five applicants seeking a spot.
Incumbent Amy Hoffman filed to keep her seat, and others turning in applications were Susan Keen, Connie Terry, Raygenna Heath and Larry Farmer.
Early voting in the Saturday, May 3, election will get underway Tuesday, April 22.
The deadline for those not currently registered to vote to register and be eligible to vote in May elections is Thursday, April 3. Visit votetexas.gov for more information about voting.
