The Hill County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an ongoing scam that is targeting Hill County residents.
HCSO reported that scammers are contacting people by phone claiming to be deputies. They tell the person that they have missed a federal court subpoena and need to sign papers or pay a fine to avoid legal action.
The sheriff’s office reminds residents that deputies will never make contact by phone to demand immediate action for missing a court appearance or require the immediate signing of paperwork.
No law enforcement agency will ask for payment over the phone, especially via unconventional means like prepaid cards, wire transfers or online apps.
Anyone contacted by a scammer should refuse to give out personal information, avoid making any payments, hang up and report the incident to the sheriff’s office.
The HCSO non-emergency number is 254-582-5313.
