White Bluff Volunteer Fire Department recently purchased a used 2016 ambulance to upgrade its abilities to assist firefighters during long emergency incidents.
This new unit will be dispatched to calls within Hill County when the Firefighter Assist and Support Team is requested.
Previously, the support team had been working out of a van that would carry coolers with water and rehydrating drinks and, due to limited space, only protein bars and snacks. After the Blum fire in 2023 and the continued high fire danger in Hill County, the department realized that a larger, better-equipped unit was needed.
The larger unit has allowed a microwave to be added, which allows the team to prepare soup or meals, and a coffeemaker. The unit has additional room for water, rehydrating drinks and snacks.
One of the most important aspects of the unit is that it offers a firefighter a place to cool off or warm up within the vehicle. It also carries an automated external defibrillator, oxygen and medical supplies to handle minor emergencies until CareFlite arrives, along with chairs, canopies, a cot and many other useful supplies.
“Many fires and emergencies can last three or more hours with firefighters working in extreme conditions and temperatures,” said Support and Rehab Coordinator Kathy Corbin.
“This unit will help firefighters rest and recharge during a fire.”
