Minister Bruce Martin and his wife, Debbie, are retiring after 33 years of service to the Whitney Church of Christ. The congregation invites the public to a retirement celebration Saturday, April 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church.
The couple and their children came to Whitney from Galveston in 1992. Before coming to Whitney, Martin ministered to congregations in Kopperl, Oklahoma, Pilot Point and Galveston.
He has served the Whitney congregation and community in many ways, including preaching, teaching, visiting, performing ceremonies, baptisms, praying and counseling.
Members of the congregation say that he loves to visit people and listen to their life stories. It is not unusual for Martin to be seen around town with a big smile on his face.
He has been involved in mission work in Honduras and Thailand and has been a speaker at various lectureships. He served on several boards and committees throughout the community of Whitney, including the local food bank, local hospice and as past president of the Whitney Downtown Merchants Association.
Martin served as a liaison office for the Corp of Engineers and was recognized as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1984. He is currently a member of the executive board of the Lake Whitney Library.
“Bruce and Debbie will continue to serve the Lord, only in a different capacity, will continue to live in Whitney, and will enjoy traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. He will continue to remodel homes and fly his Cessna 172,” said a church spokesperson.
“Bruce can now reflect on the many good experiences and lives that were changed over the 33 years of his service as a minister of the Church of Christ and as a community member to Whitney. He believes that God has been very gracious to him and his family and looks forward to what the Lord has planned for his future.”
Everyone is welcome to attend the retirement celebration to wish the Martins well in this new chapter of their lives.
