A 40-year-old Hubbard man was sentenced to 60 years for a 2023 assault on his elderly grandmother after a Hill County trial that wrapped up Wednesday, April 23.
Christopher Loud was found guilty of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit assault for breaking into his 87-year-old grandmother’s house and beating her until she lost consciousness.
It was the third attempt to bring the case to trial in the 66th Judicial District Court. The first ended in a mistrial after Loud’s angry outburst frightened a juror, and the second ended after Loud punched his former attorney, Patrick Dohoney, upon entering the courtroom. That attack left Dohoney without sight in one eye and is set to go to trial in the coming weeks.
Due to Loud’s previous courtroom outbursts, there was heavy security for the trial and his movements were restricted with security devices.
“We are pleased with the jury’s verdict, including finding that the defendant’s hands were used as a deadly weapon, since that finding will require the defendant to serve at least 30 years of his sentence in prison before being considered for parole for the first time,” said District Attorney Mark Pratt.
Loud’s trial for the attack on Dohoney is expected to be held in Hill County in June.
