The Hill County Sheriff’s Office has announced the death of retired Hill County Sheriff V. Brent Button, who passed away Saturday, September 20, at the age of 82 in Hillsboro.
Sheriff Button began his service as a Hill County sheriff’s deputy in 1978 under former Sheriff Ray Pettit. He began serving as sheriff in 1980 and served until his retirement on January 1, 2009. At the time of his retirement, Button was the most tenured active sheriff in the state, serving for a total of seven consecutive terms.
Hill County Sheriff Hunter Barnes said that Sheriff Button saw Hill County change a great deal over his years of service. “He navigated the political landscape and growth of the county, oversaw the dramatic changes and growth from the Hill County Cell Block to the Law Enforcement Center, and on to the massive expansion to the current Hill County Jail,” announced Barnes.
“He also led many high-profile criminal investigations through his career and brought many people to justice for those he served.”
Barnes and the sheriff’s office staff extended condolences to the Button family and expressed appreciation for his years of service to Hill County and the department.
Funeral services were held at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 25.
