The candidate filing period for May city and school elections will open Wednesday, January 14.
For the City of Whitney, the council seats currently held by Valery Peacock, Cheryl Taylor-West and Vicki Wilson will be expiring in May.
Those interested in filing for a council seat can do so at Whitney City Hall, 115 West Jefferson Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There will be three school board seats available on the Whitney ISD board. They are currently held by AJ Marino, Nicole Corson and Brent Marbut.
Filing will be conducted at the Whitney ISD superintendent’s office, at 305 South San Jacinto, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Candidate requirements include: you must be a U.S. citizen 18 years of age or older, must not have been determined by a court to be mentally incapacitated without the right to vote, must not have a standing felony conviction, must have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the area you are running for office for six months, and must be registered to vote.
The filing period will end at 5 p.m. Friday, February 13.
