The community is invited to celebrate Texas Independence Day Monday, March 2, from 5-7 p.m. at Whitney City Park, launching local participation in the TexasAmerica250 commemorations.
Lion Debbie Gregory highlighted the significance of this year’s historical milestones. “This year has several key historical anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 190 years since Texas declared independence, 150 years of Whitney organizing as a community, and it marks the 95th anniversary of the Whitney Lions Club (est. June 29, 1931),” Gregory said.
“We are blessed to have a trove of local historical treasures and resources documenting so much of what has happened in this area and how it impacted Texas and the United States,” she added.
Families will have the opportunity to mingle, test their Texas trivia knowledge, enjoy refreshments and participate in kid-friendly, state-themed crafts.
The event falls on the evening before primary election day: all candidates are welcome to briefly address attendees beginning at 5:30 p.m., and there will be local election information available.
Organizers encourage residents to take part in both the celebration and the civic process. “Be sure to vote,” Gregory added. “Our ancestors fought hard to establish and preserve our liberty.”
