
Whitney High School powerlifters competed at the boys’ state meet in Abilene Friday, March 27, bringing home state medals and finishing 14th out of 102 schools.
Senior Guadalupe Villarreal reached the podium as the state runner-up and earned a second-place medal. At regionals, Villarreal took first in the 165 lb. class and broke three Division 3 regional records with a 575 lb. squat, 590 lb. deadlift and an overall total of 1,530 lbs.
Seniors Ethan Rogers and Kyren Howard each earned medals for their fifth-place finishes. At regionals, Rogers took second in the 165 lb. class and Howard was a state qualifier with a second-place win in the 148 lb. unequipped division.
Aiden Albright also advanced to state after taking third place in the 165 lb. class at regionals, and he earned eighth place at the state meet.
Joel Torres earned second place in the 148 lb. class at regionals to advance to state, and he set a new bench press personal record of 335 lbs. in Abilene.
Other medal winners at regionals were Anthony Castillo, who earned third place in the 123 lb. class and Tyler Cabazos, who earned fourth place in the 275 lb. class.
