The City of Whitney’s Community Enrichment Group met Thursday, May 30, and discussed upcoming initiatives to clean up the city and assist citizens.
Among the items discussed were new monthly dump days for Whitney residents at the Itasca landfill, storm cleanup efforts with G&B Services and city crews, a city-wide cleanup set for later this month and other projects that are still in the works.
Free Dump Days at Landfill
It was announced that City of Whitney residents can now use the Itasca landfill for free the first Saturday of every month. Previously, they were limited to free dump days scheduled in March, June, September and December.
The city requested easier access for citizens and received permission from Republic Services for monthly dumping. Those residing inside Whitney’s city limits who pay for trash service through their City of Whitney water bill are eligible, but only four trips per year, per household are allowed.
To monitor the number of trips, the city will provide a pass for citizens who wish to use the landfill. Passes are available at City Hall with a valid photo ID (for those whose names appear on the water bill), or a photo ID and paper copy of a water bill (for those who live at the residence but are not named on the bill). The address on the photo ID must match the address on the water bill.
Residents should be aware of Republic Services’ rules for the landfill. A hard hat and safety vest are required to exit your vehicle; these are available for purchase at the landfill. All loads must also be tarped.
Items that will not be accepted include appliances containing Freon, batteries, free liquids, hazardous materials or tires. Waste in excess of 4 cubic yards will be $7.50 per additional yard, plus applicable taxes and fees. Those with questions about Republic’s requirements can call 254-221-4416.
Storm Cleanup
The group also discussed the storm cleanup effort that the city is conducting with G&B. Pickup will be Thursday, June 6, and Friday, June 7. Larger logs that meet requirements will be picked up by city crews Saturday, June 8. No sign-up is needed for the first round of brush pickup, but those wanting to be included on the city’s Saturday pickup list must contact the city. See accompanying story in this edition for more information about the storm cleanup effort.
City-Wide Cleanup June 22
A city-wide cleanup has been scheduled for Saturday, June 22, to help residents clean up their properties. City of Whitney residents with a 2024 water bill and photo ID can place trash in dumpsters that will be placed at Whitney City Park from 8 a.m. until noon, or until they are full. The cleanup will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Dumpsters can fill up quickly, so those planning to take advantage of the opportunity should show up on time.
The city will have four, 40-yard roll-off boxes on site courtesy of the Heart of Texas Council of Governments (HOTCOG) and one 40-yard roll-off courtesy of Republic Services. HOTCOG will also supply a tire trailer.
Dumpsters will be located at the back of the city park. Traffic should enter on Cleveland Street and exit on Polk.
Upcoming Programs
The city’s Community Enrichment Group has other upcoming programs in the works that are not ready to be announced, but details will be released soon. Current programs being developed would further assist residents in maintaining their properties.
