The Whitney Independent School District Board of Trustees tabled a decision on the possible termination of Intermediate School Assistant Principal Dr. Steven Slaughter after a special meeting Thursday, April 23, drew a large crowd of teachers and parents in his support.
The board considered the action following an incident earlier this month in which Slaughter intervened in a physical altercation between students. Superintendent Todd Southard issued a statement at that time saying that the response did not align with district policy.
While specific details have not been publicly released by the district, Southard said in the April 16 statement that the altercation between students occurred in a physical education class, and several students were seen by a nurse as a precaution, with their families notified after the incident.
Parents took to social media afterwards, referencing Dr. Slaughter taking action to stop a student who was in the process of harming other students in the class.
Multiple teachers and parents spoke in support of Slaughter, saying that there has been a notable improvement in campus climate, staff morale and student relationships during his time with the district.
Speakers said that he is a consistent presence on campus, checking in with students and staff every day, building trust with families and fostering a safe and supportive environment. Several noted his ability to connect with students who need additional attention, while maintaining accountability and respect.
Others addressed the recent incident, saying that it is an example of the challenges educators face in responding to fast-moving situations. Speakers said staff are often required to make split-second decisions to ensure student safety and expressed concern that disciplinary action in this case could discourage intervention when it is needed.
The board convened in executive session for over an hour before voting to table action. The issue is expected to be back before the board at a future meeting.
