Whitney spent the first quarter finding its footing Friday night.
Then the Wildcats hit the gas.
Exploding for 23 points in the second quarter, the Wildcats turned a 7-3 game into a 30-3 halftime blowout before holding off Gatesville for a 58-38 victory at McKamie Stadium.
The win moved Whitney to 3-1 heading into District 6-3A Division I play and gave the Wildcats another impressive victory over a larger Class 4A opponent.
Following a quiet start, the pace picked up with an interception from Keegan Estill that put Whitney in position for its second possession. Quarterback Kobe Haynes established his presence when he connected with Rex Gatlin, who broke through several tackles on a 35-yard touchdown reception.
For the night, Haynes accounted for eight touchdowns (five passing, three rushing) and nearly 500 yards of total offense, continuing a remarkable start to his senior season.
Through four games, the TCU commit has racked up 28 total touchdowns.
Gatesville answered with a field goal before the Wildcats took control both offensively and defensively in the second quarter. Whitney marched down the field, but the Hornets mustered a goal-line stand.
Whitney’s defense quickly turned the missed touchdown opportunity into points by trapping Gatesville in the end zone for a safety to make it 9-3.
The Wildcats then went back to work offensively.
Haynes spotted a sprinting KJ O’Hearn for a 41-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 16-3. The defense stood tall again, forcing a turnover on downs to stall the Hornets’ drive. With the ball back in his hands, Haynes tossed a bomb to Gatlin, who made a diving catch deep in Gatesville territory. Haynes then broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown run.
The defense fed off the momentum and stuffed Gatesville on a fourth down with just over a minute left in the half. Once again, Haynes quickly connected with Gatlin for 40 yards, setting up a 17-yard touchdown toss to O’Hearn on the next play. As the dust settled, the Wildcats took a 30-3 advantage into the locker room.
Whitney closed the first half in rapid-fire fashion and seemingly put the game away, but the Hornets came out of halftime with a surge. Gatesville forced Whitney to punt on its first two possessions of the third quarter, and the Hornets eventually cut the deficit to 30-17.
But the Wildcats answered as Haynes located Fisher Watson for a 16-yard touchdown, pushing the lead back to 37-17.
The pesky Hornets answered again and again, but Whitney continued the scoring frenzy and maintained control.
Haynes added another touchdown run — this one from 14 yards — early in the fourth quarter to make it 44-24. Whitney and Haynes stretched the lead to 51-31 with a 60-yard strike to Ja’Caiden Overstreet.
Gatesville added one more touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but Whitney made the final statement with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 58-38.
The victory capped a challenging non-district stretch for the Wildcats, who have now faced larger programs in Hillsboro and Gatesville while also playing perennial 2A power Mart and traditional 3A power Cameron Yoe.
Whitney’s only loss came by one point at Cameron Yoe in a 62-61 shootout. Now the Wildcats turn their attention to the games that count in the standings.
District 6-3A Division I play begins next week against Mexia, giving Whitney a chance to carry its high-powered offense and opportunistic defense into a district race that will put a premium on consistency.
The Wildcats have made plenty of noise through four weeks. Now, the real test begins.
Player of the Game
Junior Rex Gatlin is this week’s Player of the Game. The receiver broke several tackles on his way to a 35-yard touchdown that put the Wildcats on the scoreboard.
Throughout the game, Gatlin made multiple dynamic catches that put the Wildcats in position for the win.
